Google has just announced Google Wave, a new in-browser communication and collaboration tool that is already being hailed by some as the next evolution of email.
“Created by two of the guys behind Google Maps with a small team in Sydney, the concept behind Google Wave is to ‘unify’ communication on the web. It’s a hybrid of email, web chat, IM, and project management software.”

Some interesting titbits here. For my part, I note T-Mobile’s ‘contentment’ with HSPA and the metrics provided for backhaul to cell sites. Their HSPA speeds of ‘up to 1Mbps’ are modest compared to advertised rates here in Australia of up to 7Mbps (and 20Mbps claimed by Telstra).
Very interested also to see how they make use of numerous (small?) providers used for backhaul. Agility rules.
Also, I take on-board the comments about smartphones not yet being suited to HSPA (really??). So, do the Telcos here have anything to fear in terms of backhaul usage from the existing generation of phones and can we please get over the rip-off era of data charging and differentiated charging for modems vs phones!

With 3’s HTC Magic available from mid-June, starting at $63/month for 1GB ’tis the season for smartphone merryness to be sure.
But it’s about getting the data cost comparable with the cost of data via the same Telco’s HSPA (via-a-modem) plans and the sooner this period if data shenanigins is over and forgotten the better.
